IKARUS TECH solar mounting system

New horizons for Ikarus

Ikarus has always been a role model for innovative companies, but the company, which is primarily known as a bus manufacturer, is not only striving to create a lasting impression in the field of vehicle production, but Ikarus Tech, a joint venture of Ikarus and Astrasun , is also aiming to become a leader in the production of solar support structures.

The company also takes the lead in solar panel supporting structure production.

On 1 December 2023, the Hungarian Solar Panel and Solar Collector Association organised one of the most prestigious events of the Hungarian solar industry, the 16th Solar Conference – Industry and Investor Workshop, with great interest.

At the event, Viktor Horváth, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, said that under next year’s support programme, solar systems with a capacity of up to 5 kW instead of 4 kW and energy storage systems with a capacity of up to 10 kWh instead of 8 kWh can be installed, and two thirds of the investment costs will be covered by the programme.

At the conference, major players in the solar sector were represented and IKARUS TECH Kft. also introduced itself.
In his presentation, Managing Director Dr. Attila Keresztes said that IKARUS TECH aims to become one of Europe’s leading solar support structure manufacturers.

Managing Director, Dr. Attila Keresztes, told us about the plans.

There are few companies in Hungary with a longer history than Ikarus, whose predecessor company started operations in 1895. Of course, Ikarus is known primarily as a bus manufacturer, and the company has gained worldwide recognition in that field, being the world’s fourth largest bus manufacturer in the 1980s. The classic Ikarus 260s, which have been on the roads of many countries for decades, have become particularly legendary.

Nowadays, the group is also striving to become a leading player in other areas besides electric bus production, and that is why Ikarus Tech Kft. was established this year as a joint venture of Ikarus and Astrasun.

We are trying to combine the 130 years of manufacturing expertise of Ikarus with Astrasun’s more than a decade of experience in the renewable energy market, which is why we thought that we could be successful together in the solar panel supporting structure manufacturing market in the form of a joint company,” said managing director Dr. Attila Keresztes in the interview with our paper. – This is only surprising at first, as the Ikarus Group is currently engaged in the production and sale of advanced electric buses for domestic and export markets, as well as the mass production of metal products, and there we have already arrived at solar panel support structures. Advanced manufacturing technologies require continuous product development and innovative solutions, which has always been a hallmark of Ikarus.

Since 2013, Astrasun has achieved increasing success in solar power project development, construction and investment, earning first-hand practical experience with support structures. The company is very much involved in innovation and research, it has its own renewable energy department at Óbuda University and has launched a number of programmes in Hungary and abroad,” said Attila Keresztes, explaining the background of Ikarus Tech.

– One of the key elements in the design of a solar power plant is a weather-resistant supporting structure, for which both the site conditions and the customer’s needs must be taken into account, so a wide range of solutions is required. They must be cost-effective on-site, with technical solutions that do not require frequent maintenance, but that can be guaranteed for as long as possible. Our solution offers just that, as these support structures require maintenance once a year and we can also offer a 20-year guarantee. Unlike many other manufacturers in the Far East, IKARUS Tech gives its customers what they ordered in terms of quality and technical solutions, and the product can be recycled if necessary, with which we are also contributing to a sustainable future.
